My name is Brad and I’ve been training with and now working for The Tec Exec since I was in year 10 at Batemans Bay High School. I’ve gained valuable experience from this and from school and have been able to implement into my career straight away as a digital mentor helping overcome fear of technology in older people in my community.
My time working at The Tec Exec so far has been amazing. Teaching seniors about technology has been fun and rewarding at the same time. Also having the ability to work alongside The Tec Exec’s Lead Digital Mentor Trish Pye has shown me that I can put my skills to use while ensuring that the seniors get the best learning experience is the most rewarding feeling I could ask for.
During one of our recent mentoring sessions, I overheard one of the seniors say the training session was the best learning experience they’d had over any other organization they’d experienced. This gave me full confidence in my skills and abilities and in ours as an organisation is on the right track when delivering digital skills training sessions.
Last year I finished my HSC and it is great to know that the things that I’ve learnt at school through my IT classes can be used to help others in our community and that technology is used on a daily basis by everyone. Knowing that also having this opportunity to assist Trish can lead to positions to IT that are more efficient and purposeful for my future.
Knowing that people really do appreciate my tech skills and what I have to offer makes me as a person feel like I am truly a valued member of the community.
My digital mentoring experience has increased my confidence, improved my communication skills (learning to slow down and think about what I have to say) and allowed my confidence to really show enabling me to become the best person I can be.
Anyone who has a desire to get into Information Technology (IT) this is a perfect way to have a bit of kickstart towards that field. Register on the form provided below.
Overall this is an experience that so far has been amazing. It has shown me a pathway in which I could go into and make a long term career out of. It gives me the experience I need for my future and the seniors the information and confidence they need to be able to do daily tasks in a digital world.
Watch out for my next blog will be about my experiences returning to high school to talk to students and teachers about digital careers available now. What skills can a young digital mentor offer you? Digital mentors can be of any age and any skill level who are keen to help others learn digital skills.
